Next week I’ll be heading to Venice, CA for one of the brands I work with – the designer is hosting a press trip and dinner with a number of editors and influencers, so we have activities planned throughout the weekend. While there, we’ll have a day of some fun in the sun at the beach, so I definitely want to be prepared. I’m a stickler for sunscreen and any products with SPF – ask my friends! I always have at least two bottles on hand whenever we take a trip to the beach or even to lay out in the park. I get it – black skin produces more melanin, which decreases the visible signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, age spots and also decreases our chances for skin cancer. However, this does not completely eliminate the risk.
Personally, I’ve gotten sunburn twice in my life and I don’t want it to ever happen again. One of my favorite sunscreens – which I have been using for years, is the Lancer Sheer Fluid Sun Shield SPF 30 ($52.00). What I love about it is that it is super lightweight – unlike most sunscreens, which are heavy and very sticky. This one isn’t greasy and doesn’t have a bad odor to it. What also makes it great is that while it protects my skin from harmful UV rays it also has anti-aging ingredients.
In addition to protecting my skin from the sun, I’ll also be bringing along some products that are made to rejuvenate not only my skin, but also my hair after sun exposure. Davines has launched an SU Collection that protects and treats your hair and skin from long-term sun damage.
Here’s a breakdown of each product in the collection:
Davines SU Hair & Body Wash ($22.50)
A multi-benefit shampoo that moisturizes and protects hair and skin exposed to the sun. This shampoo gently cleanses the hair and body after exposure by restoring and providing hydration.
Davines SU Hair Mask ($27.50)
This is the complete anti-aging treatment for hair damaged by the sun, chlorine and salt. It restores softness, hydration and gloss. I’d put this on after the SU shampoo and leave in for at least 5 – 15 minutes!
Davines SU Hair Milk ($29.00)
A leave-on spray cream for hair, which can be used during and after exposure to the sun – so I’ll spray this onto my hair on my way out, then again before blow drying after I wash.
Davines SU Aftersun ($29.00) **available in June!
After-sun cream gel should be applied only after exposure to the sun. It moisturizes and restores the skin’s hydration levels, with ingredients like Chinotto extract and Aloe Vera extract to help soothe. It is also made with Argan oil to lock in hydration and moisture.
What is also great about this line is that they are completely sustainable – each formula contains high percentages of ingredients that are biodegradable and made naturally, to minimize their impact on the environment.
