My lips have been so chapped this winter — more than any other, and a few of my friends have said that theirs feel the same. I’ve gone through a ton of different lip balms and no matter what they just keep flaking. So I knew I had to up the ante in terms of how I take care of my lips. I started off by researching different lip scrubs, because I feel the best way to begin the process is to get rid of any dead skin. While looking into different brands and reading their ingredients it became clear that I could actually just make my own. It’s always about saving some coins, so this was the perfect alternative.
I literally put together some brown sugar, coconut oil and honey. Stirred it up and voila! As I’m sure you already know, coconut oil is the answer to all of life’s questions. It can literally be used for everything. The fatty acids and antioxidants found in it help to moisturize the skin, while the honey helps to cleanse and heal. I gently rubbed this lip scrub on and let it sit for about 3 minutes before wiping off with a damp cloth.
Now that the dead skin was scrubbed off, I needed to apply something that would repair and protect my lips from future flaking. So for this step I used the Sephora brand Shea Lip Mask ($3). It’s basically a sheet mask, but for your lips. The Shea Mask is made specifically to soothe lips that have been chapped or over dried. I peeled back the protective film from each side of the mask and then positioned it on to my lips. Gently tapping to make sure it fit all the contours of my big kissers and let it sit for 15 minutes.
The directions say that once you remove the mask to tap in the remaining product instead of rinsing off. I’m not exaggerating here, my lips felt ridiculous soft! The softest they’ve felt since the winter begun.
To add finishing touches, I smoothed on my new Glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom Universal Skin Salve ($12). What I love about this product is that it is just that, universal. For the most part I use it on my lips, but you can also apply to cuticles, eyelids, cheekbones — just about anywhere. Also, the scent of it is so seductive and truly smells like vacation as they say on the website.
Chapped, flaky lips be gone!
