Now, OnyxBox is nothing new — but because I’m cheap and already had a subscription to BirchBox I was too lazy to try it for myself. It wasn’t until recently when their General Manager reached out to see if I might be interesting in receiving one to try out that I decided to look into it further, and let me tell you I’m so damn happy Chaia contacted me. I didn’t even plan on writing a post on it, but I’m very pleased with what I received and had to share!
I’m not going to lie, I’ve had BirchBox for over a year and although I have been less then enthusiastic about the contents of my most recent boxes I haven’t really looked in to other beauty subscription boxes. Call me a creature of habit, but I guess I was holding on to the fact that they were pretty much the pioneer of the beauty subscription box space so stuck with it. Sadly, as a much more informed consumer and Black woman looking for products that are tailored to my specific needs — that isn’t enough. I feel BirchBox got lazy with their offering, and although I filled out a (very lengthy) survey before they began sending over boxes, lately it’s seemed as though only one or two samples per box were what I’d actually be interested in.
What I love about OnyxBox is that they send over full-size products that total in value of at least $75+, so you really get a bang for your buck by only paying $25/per month. Inside my box for June, I was pleased to first see a super cute product description card with a beautiful dark skinned woman on the front who’s lewk coincided with the month’s “Island Gyal” theme. My products included a ColourPop Lippie Stix, Oils of the World L.A. Summer Glow Oil, Rutz Naturals Potent-C Vitamin C + E Serum, Measurable Difference Baked Blush Mini in “Strawberry Sorbet” and the Eden Bodyworks Citrus Fusion Refresher Spray. All of which, I will be using. Rutz Naturals also included an extra goodie, which I thought was very fitting — and Onyx healing stone.
I was most pleased by the quality of product and how they all truly went with the specific theme of summer to bring in the season. I can tell that everything OnyxBox does is very thought out and the delivery is smart, which I appreciate.
The only downside to OnyxBox is that they do not have a survey as of yet, so each box isn’t specifically curated per person. However, that doesn’t make them any less special. A box for and by Black women is good enough for me. I look forward to seeing the brand continue to grow and see what they have in store, they’ve definitely gained a full-time subscriber.
