As those of you who read my blog regularly know, I have long been a fan of the brand Glossier. I’ve actually been a rep for them for two years this month! Now, don’t let that deter you–my rep status has not swayed my opinion on certain products. If you ask me, I’m very open about which products I am/am not a fan of. And one aspect of the brand that I felt always needed more was their color makeup offering. But because I understand that Glossier is targeted more towards those of us (myself included) who love a more natural look, with skin first, I didn’t expect them to ever really branch out. Fortunately, that all changed when I was introduced to their new sister brand, Glossier Play, which launched recently.
In true Glossier fashion, Play was rolled out in a small batch. The initial launch includes a “Colorslide” eye pencil ($15), “Vinylic Lip” high shine lacquer ($16), “Nightshine” highlighter concentrate ($20), and “Glitter Gelée” eye shadow ($14).
I’m pleased to say that the pigmentation on each of these products really packs a punch. I’ll tell you the truth–when I saw the new collection I was intrigued but also skeptical. Certain products look great in a campaign, but would they actually pop on my skin? The answer is yes, yes chile they did!
I’ve been completely obsessed with Glossier’s Lip Gloss since its launch, I wear it practically every day when I’m not wearing any color on my lips. It’s the epitome of the perfect gloss. High shine, but not sticky, long lasting, and doesn’t dry out your lips. I love that Glossier Play is now offering a similar formula in varying colors with their Vinylic Lip Lacquer.
Colored eyeliner is something I’m no stranger to, I think it’s the perfect addition to a neutral makeup look during the day or night. Glossier Play’s Colorslide really lives up to its name because when I swipe it on, it actually glides across my skin! Not to mention I don’t have to go over it a billion times for the color to actually show up, which is a huge plus.
When it comes to shimmer, a little of both the Glitter Gelée and Nightshine go a long way. They’re the perfect finishing touch to give any makeup look that wow factor. Now, the biggest complaint I’ve heard is that the Glitter Gelée does not have biodegradable glitter, which is a disappointment to a number of Glossier’s all-natural fans. Fortunately, from what I’ve seen in the IG comments, the brand has heard the outcry and is in the process of rectifying this.
Aside from that, I found the Glitter Gelee and Nightshine both very easy to apply. The Glitter was not too sticky and didn’t leave much creasing on my eyelid which I love. You can either apply it with a small brush, your own or theirs, or your fingers. I actually like the Nightshine more than Haloscope because of the way it can be applied. Unlike Haloscope, I don’t have to swipe it on so it layers well with other makeup. Also, I felt that instantly the pigment was much deeper and gave me more of a glow.
Outside of “glitter-gate”, my only other complaint is size. Glossier’s products can be a bit pricey compared to the sizing option. Personally, I’m not doing a full beat every day so the products won’t run out that quickly for me. However, I can see those who do use more makeup on a regular basis being upset by this.
Nevertheless, I’m really pleased with what Glossier Play has to offer so far. I feel like it’s definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to broadening their audience. I’ve seen some complaints about the colors, but all of the ones I have look great on my complexion and would look amazing on other women of color. I’m into it and can’t wait to see what else the new line has in store!
