I’m back! So sorry for the long hiatus, I was on a beautiful vacation in my home island of Jamaica. I don’t believe I’ve mentioned this as of yet, but I was born there and moved to the U.S. when I was two years old —I actually have not been back since I was 5. So, this was a very overdue trip for me as an adult. I went away with my entire immediate family and we stayed at the wonderful Riu Resort in Ocho Rios, which I highly recommend.
For most of the summer I had my hair in long Senegalese Twists, but about a month or so before I left, I actually decided to take them out (smart, right? :\). In an effort to save funds and have a bit of versatility, I didn’t get it re-twisted and instead left my own hair out in order to play around with a few different styles while away. I got a fresh relaxer (using Dark and Lovely) a few days before leaving, which made it a bit easier to manage. However, tragedy struck when I realized that I accidentally forgot to bring my Aveda Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother ($25), which does an amazing job of maintaining my hair in humid weather. So after a few failed attempts at curling / flat ironing my hair and having it either flop or stick to my face from sweat, I decided to get slightly creative. For the most part, I rocked two pig tail buns and then towards the end of my trip decided to go with two french braids (thanks to my mom) that I pinned up in the back.
Let me tell you, the after sun SU Collection by Davines and my Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner worked wonders! This is the type of trip these products were made for. My hair was extremely hydrated the entire time and so easy to manage and style. The leave-in conditioner was the perfect de-tangler and kept my hair silky smooth like I hadn’t just been in the salt water or chlorine from the pool.
The SU After Sun Moisturizer by Davines also kept my skin just as hydrated each day and was the perfect base for my Aveeno Natural Protection Sunscreen ($10.99). There was literally no escaping the sun wherever I went and the heat was absolutely no joke. I got quite the tan, but no sunburn — AMEN!
As for makeup — I kept it super light. With my new tan, which happened after my first day of laying on the beach, it pretty much acted like the perfect foundation. My face was one even tone, so for the most part I rocked mascara and my new Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator highlighter in Gilded Honey. I got it in my July BirchBox and have been obsessed ever since. It added the perfect glow to my sun kissed face. I also experiment quite a bit with lip colors to give my look a bit more of a pop at night when going out.
My only regret was not carrying a lip balm with SPF — I noticed very very minor sunburn bumps on my lips the last day — which quickly went away once I came back. I’m currently on the hunt for a good lip exfoliator. Stay tuned!
